Metals and SMEs: strong in craftsmanship

The current metal sector in the Netherlands is fragmented and characterised by many smaller players. Such smaller companies and their entrepreneurs have – given the size of their businesses – their hands full managing daily operations.

Challenges

In such smaller enterprises, there is – as a rule – simply too little time and money to act in an enterprise-transcending manner and to devote sufficient attention to the key challenges that loom over the metal sector in general.

Commerce

Current situation

  • Focus on serving the current customer base, often combined with (significant) customer concentration
  • Commercial growth often overlooked due to lack of time and focus
  • Lack of a structural plan on the commercial side

Staff

Current situation

  • Shortage of (qualified) technical personnel in the market
  • A large proportion of the existing staff are often approaching retirement age.
  • A structural/holistic HR policy and ‘employer branding’ is often missing

Investments

Current situation

  • Lack of vision for future market developments and resulting investments
  • Investments often limited to only strictly necessary investments or replacement investments

Our ideas

We are convinced that intensive cooperation between such companies within the MetaLink group can more effectively tackle the challenges of the metal industry, with the following two principles:

  1. Focusing on solving sector-wide challenges (commerce and personnel) at the MetaLink level, with the different individual Business units decentralised in their strength and can focus on what they are good at: delivering high-quality products and services to their customers
  2. Allocating financial resources at the MetaLink level to investments that are essential for the business units under our umbrella to remain competitive: investing in people, investing in innovative solutions, and investing in complementary enterprises through acquisitions.
